Five Days, One Island and A Change Of Plans
When an American couple first contacted us, they were looking at the island of Crete as the place where they would begin their next chapter. They were planning their retirement and wanted to find a beautiful home, close to the sea, with the space and lifestyle they had imagined for themselves. They reached out to us to help them explore Crete, but their request came just days before the August holiday period. And in Greece, August is a different kind of month. The country slows down as families leave for their holidays, and August 15 is one of the country’s major public holidays, with many businesses and professionals taking time off around it.
So, we had five days. Five days, one island, and a lot to coordinate.
Crete is a big island
Crete is not a small island that you can simply cross from one side to the other in an afternoon. It stretches approximately 260 kilometres from east to west, and the geography, roads and mountain routes mean that distances can translate into significant travelling time. Then there was the practical reality of trying to organise everything in August.
Agents had to be contacted. Owners had to be reached. Availability had to be confirmed. Properties had to be filtered. Viewings had to be arranged and grouped geographically so that the couple would not spend their precious days simply driving from one part of the island to another. There were many conversations happening behind the scenes.And every time one property became unavailable, another had to be considered.
The value of having someone on the ground
This is perhaps the part of relocation that is hardest to understand until you actually experience it. From abroad, a property search can look very simple. You see a beautiful house online. You save it. You contact the agent. You arrange a viewing. But when you are trying to relocate to another country, particularly when you are unfamiliar with the geography, the market and the way things work locally, the number of decisions can quickly become overwhelming.
Which properties are genuinely worth seeing?
Is the location right for everyday life, or is it simply beautiful for a holiday?
Is the advertised distance from the airport realistic?
What happens in winter?
Is the property actually available for a long-term rental?
Is the asking price realistic?
And when several properties look equally attractive online, how do you know which ones deserve your limited time?
This is where our role becomes much more than simply arranging viewings. We filter the options, ask the right questions, coordinate with agents and owners, and negotiate on our clients’ behalf. With our local market expertise, we help them navigate the choices in front of them and, most importantly, make confident and informed decisions.
The itinerary was only part of the job
We worked remotely to build a carefully curated viewing programme around their limited time in Crete. Properties were grouped according to location. Agents were contacted and availability coordinated. Requirements were clarified. Pet policies were checked. Alternative options were introduced where necessary and, when the right properties were identified, we helped coordinate the conversations and negotiations around them. The goal was never simply to show them as many houses as possible. It was to make sure that every hour they spent viewing properties was useful.
Sometimes a destination might not be THE one
After experiencing Crete beyond the photographs and property listings, the couple realised that Crete was beautiful, but it wasn’t their place. And this is an important part of what we believe a good relocation service should be. It should not be about convincing someone to choose a particular destination. It should be about helping them understand what is right for them. Crete gave them valuable information that no property website could have provided.They experienced the distances, saw the surrounding areas and, eventually, they were able to say:
“This isn’t quite what we’re looking for.”
So we started again.
Today, we are still working together. But this time, we are not simply searching for another property in another location. We are going back to where it all starte, back to the beginning. We are looking at their lifestyle, their priorities, their travel habits, their need for services and healthcare, their preferred proximity to the sea and airport, the kind of community they want around them and, most importantly, what they want their everyday life in Greece to feel like. From there, we are narrowing down the possibilities. Perhaps it will be the Peloponnese, Attica, Thessaloniki or Nafplio. We don’t know yet, and that is perfectly fine.
Because relocation is not a property transaction but a life decision.
